Write Creative Nonfiction About Yourself

Sometimes we need to exercise creative thinking to get us out of a patterned way of seeing ourselves. Writing creative nonfiction about yourself will enable you to envision vastly different careers options and new possibilities.

  1. Start with a list of milestones and events from your current career path map

  2. Suspend logic for a second and pretend these bullet points have nothing to do with you.

  3. Add 10 fictional bullet points anywhere on the map – make them plausible things you have never done. Challenge yourself to imagine something completely fictitious, not just a path you didn’t take.

  4. Write three different fictional storylines about a character that could unite all of these disparate milestones and life events.

    1. What are their career ambitions and goals?

    2. How did they get there?

    3. How did they unite this diverse list of milestones into a different reality than yours?

  5. Write a future biography for each character. What did they end up doing? How did they achieve their goals?

  6. Reflect on the implications of these stories on your own life. How could you tell your story differently in order to become your future self? What would you have to let go of? What would this new story enable or change?
