Describe Your Dream Job
There are three critical questions to ask yourself before you decide what your ‘dream job’ is.
- What do you want?
Make a list of everything you want in life, including material things and money. Where do you live and what do you want your home to look like? What kinds of relationships do you have? What are things or experiences that you imagine will bring you happiness? - What path do you want to walk?
This question is rarely asked with as much depth as the first, yet is the key to your happiness. The path you want to walk is the process by which you will get what you want. Do you want to have time for family and friends? Would you like to have long days or short days? How do you want to spend your time? How does creativity fit into your day? If you don’t ask this question you will default to the easiest and most visible path to get what you want. For example, if you want a lot of money you might become a banker. Later on in life you may have a mid-life crisis when you realize that you really don’t enjoy what the life of a banker entails. By figuring out your path, right now, you can avoid wandering down the wrong ones. - How can our chosen path help us get what we want?
Our brains are wired to synthesize and make sense of disparate information. By asking how your path can help get what you want, you will begin to see answers that you didn’t realize were possible. The critical voice in your head might say, “Well that’s not realistic. You can’t make a lot of money and have free time. Reality works like x not y.” This voice will keep you on the easiest and most visible path and does not have your best interests in mind: it will keep you afraid and stuck. Ignore it, and spend time online finding people who are getting what they want, how they want. - Reflect on these questions.
After answering each question, write a description of what your dream job would look like. Try to include as many details as possible. What does the office space look like that combines your wants and your path? What do you really value and how do those values show up during the course of your day? What does a workday look like and how do you feel at the end of it?
